6 “I Can’t Believe That Was Said” Comments
There were several break out sessions at the last “industry type” conference I attended. It was mainly for vacation management companies and vendors related to this type of industry. However, as the internet continues to root itself into the lives of the America people, this conference has morphed as well. Several great sessions revolve around SEO, SEM and social media.
While this was not the first conference I attended (first as a vendor) this was the first conference where I heard some very strange comments. Some directed to the SEO industry. Some directed to me. Anyway, it was a great learning experience despite some of funny things I heard and witnessed.
- I Don’t Have Time For Facebook -Yeah, who does? I log in to check my notifications and I spend a few hours checking profile and picture updates. I get where this person is coming from. Why should I or why should I pay anyone to waste time playing on the computer? A few words come to mind. How about 400 million potential customers? Do you care about that? Here is where I cam coming from. I have a sister-in-law who started a non-profit helping feed orphans in Africa. No big deal some might say. Except for that she is college student who is not of legal drinking age without much money. Do you know how she started this business and how she is already receiving donations? 2 words–SOCIAL MEDIA!
- Your Website Will Never Get The Traffic My Site Gets – This was actually said to my face by another SEO. My colleague had to grab my arm as I was about to go crazy. Who says that to someone? This person knew nothing about me. Only that I am an SEO selling a product to the vacation rental industry (I was not selling my services by the way). At any rate, I was able to verify the number of visitors this individual was receiving through Compete and Quantcast (only estimates I know). Needless to say I shouldn’t have gotten bent out of shape!
- Mobile Websites Are Here And Now – Really!?!? I thought that was so 2 years ago. I have a lot to write about this so I will wait for an actual blog posting.
- SEO Is Dead – While I was still shocked to hear this statement said publicly at a gathering of SEO newbies it was not the first time I have heard this statement. Again, probably an entire post on this subject but I don’t believe SEO is dead. Not that I am the end all say all (not even close), but just because something changes doesn’t mean it is dead.
- Blogs Are Dead – Say what? Get a few mommy bloggers on your side and see what happens.
- The Best Directories Are Free – Surely this person got “free” and “spam” mixed up. I wanted to yell Best Of Web, Business.com, Joe Ant, and Yahoo at the top of my lungs (For a List of Best SEO Directories).
Has anyone else heard some crazy things about SEO?
