A New Laptop

I am somewhat of a gadget geek. Okay, I might be the biggest gadget geek ever. I will never be able to explain the excitement I get when I walk around in Best Buy. While I browse the many wonderful items I often find myself making lame excuses to justify some purchase. For the most part Jess does a great job dealing with my complaints and outrageous requests for new gadgets. Sometimes she replies gently, but on occasion I get the “kiss my butt” look. From then on I usually make my requests to the salesman or saleswoman (they always agree, Jess).

About a year ago (15 months into the life of my current laptop) I started conjuring up some really good reasons for buying a new laptop. To increase my possibilities I had a wide range of options on the table. I would try and incorporate her into the search process throwing out the “we can share” carrot or simply saying my laptop was broken and out dated. None seemed to work.

I had given up hope for the past few months. I am not sure if genuinely lost interest or got weary of the cause, but I let my consistent nagging slow to snails pace (consistency is the key when begging for a new toy–just ask any child). I am not sure where it came from or what brought about the conversation, but it as like an angelic sound when those words rang out of my wife’s mouth. I even heard “Chariots Of Fire” theme song start playing as I ran for my car keys (Chariots of Fire).

Now, I have even learned when to sense defeat in my wife’s voice. While it doesn’t happen very often, I have created several “go to phrases” to help finalize the the argument in my favor. Despite my hours of planning and crafting, I did not even get to use them. This was the first time in our marriage my wife authorized the purchase of a large item without any fighting on my part. I was literally stunned.

Shortly after her words were uttered (about 22 seconds) I was in the car headed towards Best Buy. She even let me go by myself to ensure I was able to pick out the computer of my choice (though I called her and my friend Josh a few times). Thanks to my wonderful wife I had a glorious Friday evening.
