Dofollow Comment Links – It’s Only Fair

For about a month I have had one phrase on my mind. It is quite popular and goes something like “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” While this wise proverb can be applied to many situations I have been struggling on how to apply these words to blogging, the blogosphere, and SEO. I had so many worthless ideas run through my brain. Finally, I settled on the simplest technique that some popular bloggers have started to implement on their blog. While I am not sure the dofollow craze will last forever I do think it is a way to help bloggers benefit from each other. Here goes…I have now lifted the nofollow tag from all blog commenting.

Like most bloggers, I love when my readers comment on my posts. Having several regular contributors can really benefit blogs by adding relevant content and aid in process of growing readership. While I think removing the nofollow tag can add to spam, I am prepared to spend more time editing comments as to help add benefits to individual bloggers who are willing to comment on my posts.

If bloggers are willing to read what I have to offer and add something of relevance why should they not receive some value out of it? This freedom does come at a cost. To help with this process I have decided to add some guidelines or etiquette tips all should follow when commenting on my site.

  1. Consistency – I do not expect you to comment on every post or even every other post. I would, however, appreciate your comments on all posts you find relevant and interesting. I do not want to discourage the random readers who do have something unique and interesting say, but posting once and never returning does through up a red flag. Plus, you don’t want to miss what I have to say as I will make every reasonable effort to reply to all comments.
  2. Opinionated – Making every effort to  be polite should be a priority, but I do expect some differing opinions. Isn’t that what blogging is all about?
  3. Value – Do not, under any circumstance, leave a comment that says “thx…great post.” Please explain to me how a comment like that is of any value to anyone?!?! Leaving a comment like that lets me know you are looking for one thing…a dofollow link. Offer something relevant and interesting. Leaving a short, canned one-liner means you found my dofollow blog, didn’t read the post, and then left a link. Hey, thanks for that!
  4. Signature -  Please do not leave a signature. No need. You have already receive a link. I am still thinking about adding “comment luv.” Lets just see how this comes along first.
  5. Titles/Names – Please be respectful. I get that everyone and their brother wants a link with perfect anchor text. Well, if you want perfect anchor text you better offer some excellent content. It will be at my discretion but if the comment is great I will probably allow whatever anchor text you deem appropriate (keeping the site PG-13, of course). On most comments, I expect the a name of your blog or something very close.

All spam will be marked as spam and immediately deleted. Don’t waste your time. If you have any questions please email me at marc @ daddydewberry.com.
